Keep the Frame, Change Everything Else

Reupholstery Is Usually the Better Buy

A hardwood frame from a Waltham estate sale or an inherited Newton wing chair is often built better than anything at today's price point. Reupholstery keeps that frame, replaces the webbing, springs, padding and fabric, and hands you a piece that fits your room and lasts another few decades.

It is also the only way to get a sofa in the exact fabric as your drapery. Pair a recovered chair with custom drapery or a fabric Roman shade for a finished, coordinated room.

Quick frame test

Lift one front corner of the piece. If the other front leg rises with it, the frame is rigid and almost always worth reupholstering.

Built to Last

What Happens Inside Your Piece

Good upholstery is invisible. Here's what we check and rebuild before new fabric goes on.
01

Frame repair

Loose joints are reglued and reinforced; cracked rails are repaired so the piece is solid again.
02

Springs & webbing

Eight-way hand-tied springs are retied or replaced; sagging webbing is renewed for proper support.
03

New padding

Choose firm foam, soft foam wrapped in down, or classic down-and-feather cushions.
04

Pattern matching

Stripes and florals are centered and matched across cushions, backs and arms.
05

Tailored details

Welt, double welt, flange, tufting, nailheads, skirts and exposed-wood finishes.
06

Performance fabrics

Stain-resistant, cleanable fabrics that survive kids, dogs and busy family rooms.

Fabric Guidance

Choosing the Right Upholstery Fabric

Fabric for a sofa that gets daily use needs very different specs than fabric for a guest-room headboard. We look at abrasion ratings, fiber content, weave and cleanability, and we calculate exact yardage — including pattern repeat — before you buy anything.

You are welcome to supply your own fabric (COM), or choose from our sample library at the Moody Street showroom.

  • Durability rating (rub count)
  • Stain & fade resistance
  • Pattern repeat and yardage
  • Texture and hand
  • Pet-friendly weaves
  • Indoor/outdoor options

Our Process

How Reupholstery Works

Most projects take four to eight weeks, depending on the piece and fabric availability.
  1. 1

    Assess the piece

Send a photo to info@designsinblinds.com or bring it in. We check the frame and give a ballpark.
  2. 2

    Pick fabric & details

Choose fabric, cushion fill and trim details; we confirm yardage and final pricing.
  3. 3

    Strip & rebuild

Old fabric and padding come off, frame and springs are repaired, new padding goes on.
  4. 4

    Recover & deliver

New fabric is applied, pattern matched and finished, then delivered back to your home.

Designer Tips

Six Guidelines Our Designers Swear By

Whether you are treating one window or an entire house, these principles help you make confident choices before your consultation.
1

Start with how the room is used

A bedroom needs darkness and quiet, a home office needs glare control, a family room needs durability and easy operation. Function first, then style — the right fabric or shade follows naturally once we know what the room has to do every day.

2

Mount higher and wider than you think

Hanging drapery hardware close to the ceiling and extending it past the window casing makes windows look taller and lets panels stack off the glass. It is the single easiest way to make a room feel bigger and brighter.

3

Layer for flexibility

A functional shade underneath and decorative drapery on top gives you privacy by day, darkness at night and softness year-round. Layering also adds insulation that you will notice during a Greater Boston winter.

4

Mind the sun

South- and west-facing rooms fade floors, rugs and upholstery. Solar shades, lined drapery and UV-resistant fabrics protect what you have invested in without shutting out the view.

5

Keep kids and pets safe

Cordless lifts and motorized shades remove dangling cords entirely. We recommend them by default in nurseries, children's rooms and any home with curious pets.

6

Think about the whole house

Consistent shade colors and hardware finishes from the street give a home a tidy, cohesive look, even when every room inside uses a different style. We plan exterior appearance as carefully as interior design.

FAQ

Upholstery Questions

Send a photo to info@designsinblinds.com for a ballpark before you bring the piece in, or call (781) 899-1811.

Is reupholstering worth it, or should I buy new?

If the frame is solid hardwood with joinery rather than staples, reupholstery almost always gives better value and better materials than a new piece at the same price.

How much fabric will I need?

A dining chair seat may take under a yard; a full sofa can take fifteen to twenty. We calculate yardage exactly, including pattern repeat, before you buy anything.

How long does upholstery take?

Generally four to eight weeks depending on the piece and fabric availability.

Do you pick up and deliver in Greater Boston?

Yes, pickup and delivery can be arranged for Waltham, Newton, Weston, Wellesley, Belmont, Lexington, Cambridge and neighboring towns.

Can I use my own fabric?

Yes. Customer's own material (COM) is welcome — we'll tell you exactly how much to order and check that it suits the piece.

What about outdoor cushions?

We make porch, deck and sunroom cushions from solution-dyed outdoor fabrics with quick-dry foam that resist fading and mildew.
