Why Custom Drapery

Drapery That Fits the Room, Not a Store Shelf

Store-bought curtains come in three or four lengths and one width. Greater Boston homes do not. A 9-foot ceiling in a Brookline brownstone, a bay window in a Lexington Colonial and a wall of sliders in a Wellesley addition all need panels built for their exact height, stack-back and fullness. Custom drapery is how you get a hem that kisses the floor, pleats that fall evenly and panels that actually close.

Every drapery project begins with a designer in your home. We look at the light, the architecture, the furniture you are keeping and how you actually use the room, then recommend a heading style, lining and hardware to match. Pair drapery with custom shades underneath for privacy and light control.

The rule of thumb we follow

Mount the rod high — close to the crown — and extend it past the casing so panels stack off the glass. Windows look taller and rooms get more light.

Styles We Make

Headings, Treatments & Top Details

The heading is the top of a drapery panel — it sets the tone of the whole room, from tailored to relaxed.

Pinch & Euro pleats

Classic two- or three-finger pleats for formal living and dining rooms. Crisp, structured and timeless in older Waltham and Newton homes.

Ripplefold & flat panels

A continuous S-wave on a track for modern rooms, sliders and wide glass walls. Clean and easily motorized.

Goblet & inverted pleats

Decorative headings with a tailored, high-end look — ideal for statement windows and two-story foyers.

Sheers & casements

Soft, light-filtering panels that diffuse glare while keeping daytime privacy on street-facing rooms.

Cornices & valances

Upholstered cornice boxes and soft valances that hide hardware and finish off a window top.

Fabric Roman shades

Flat, hobbled or relaxed Romans made from the same fabric as your drapery or upholstery.

Linings

The Hidden Layer That Does the Work

Lining protects fabric from sun, adds body, and decides how much light and cold comes through.

What Drapery Solves

Beauty Is the Bonus. Here's the Practical Side.

01

Better sleep

Blackout-lined panels with returns to the wall keep bedrooms dark through long New England summer mornings.
02

Winter comfort

Interlined drapery closed at night reduces the chill radiating off single-pane and older double-pane glass.
03

Fade protection

Linings shield floors, rugs and upholstery from UV damage in south- and west-facing rooms.
04

Acoustics

Heavier fabrics soften echo in rooms with hardwood floors and high ceilings — noticeable in open-plan homes.
05

Privacy layers

Sheers by day, lined panels by night — the easiest way to handle street-facing windows in Cambridge and Brookline.
06

Motorized ease

Tracks can be motorized for tall or wide openings. See motorized drapery options.

Fabrics & Hardware

Touch the Fabric Before You Choose It

We carry sample books from leading designer mills, plus performance fabrics that stand up to sun, kids and pets. Hardware ranges from slim iron rods with ring clips to carved wood poles, acrylic rods and concealed ceiling tracks. Bay and corner windows get custom-bent rods or tracks so panels travel without interruption.

Visit the Waltham showroom to feel fabrics and compare linings, or have a designer bring the books to you with a free in-home consultation.

Our Process

From Swatch to Final Steam

Lead times for custom drapery usually run four to eight weeks, depending on fabric availability.
  1. 1

    Design visit

We review the room, bring fabrics and recommend heading, fullness, lining and hardware.
  2. 2

    Precise measuring

Rod height, stack-back, floor variance and obstacles like radiators and vents are all recorded.
  3. 3

    Workroom build

Panels are cut on grain, lined, weighted and hand-finished for straight, even folds.
  4. 4

    Install & dress

Hardware is hung level, panels are trained and steamed so folds fall naturally from day one.

Designer Tips

Six Guidelines Our Designers Swear By

Whether you are treating one window or an entire house, these principles help you make confident choices before your consultation.
1

Start with how the room is used

A bedroom needs darkness and quiet, a home office needs glare control, a family room needs durability and easy operation. Function first, then style — the right fabric or shade follows naturally once we know what the room has to do every day.

2

Mount higher and wider than you think

Hanging drapery hardware close to the ceiling and extending it past the window casing makes windows look taller and lets panels stack off the glass. It is the single easiest way to make a room feel bigger and brighter.

3

Layer for flexibility

A functional shade underneath and decorative drapery on top gives you privacy by day, darkness at night and softness year-round. Layering also adds insulation that you will notice during a Greater Boston winter.

4

Mind the sun

South- and west-facing rooms fade floors, rugs and upholstery. Solar shades, lined drapery and UV-resistant fabrics protect what you have invested in without shutting out the view.

5

Keep kids and pets safe

Cordless lifts and motorized shades remove dangling cords entirely. We recommend them by default in nurseries, children's rooms and any home with curious pets.

6

Think about the whole house

Consistent shade colors and hardware finishes from the street give a home a tidy, cohesive look, even when every room inside uses a different style. We plan exterior appearance as carefully as interior design.

FAQ

Custom Drapery Questions

Still have a question? Call (781) 899-1811 or email info@designsinblinds.com.

How long should drapery panels be?

Most clients choose a "kiss" length that just touches the floor, or a 1–2 inch break for a relaxed look. Puddled panels suit formal rooms but are harder to keep clean. We measure floor variance at every panel so hems look even.

How much fullness do I need?

Most custom drapery is built at 2 to 2.5 times the width of the rod for rich, even folds. Sheers often go to 3 times. Too little fullness is the most common reason ready-made curtains look flat.

Can drapery be motorized?

Yes. Ripplefold and pleated drapery can run on motorized tracks with remotes, wall switches, app control or schedules. It is especially helpful on tall windows and wide sliders. See motorization.

How long does custom drapery take?

Four to eight weeks from order, depending on fabric availability and workroom scheduling. We'll confirm dates when you order.

How do I clean custom drapery?

Regular light vacuuming with a brush attachment keeps dust down. Most lined drapery should be professionally dry cleaned; we'll give you care guidance for your specific fabric.

Do you install drapery you didn't make?

Our focus is installing what we fabricate so we can stand behind the fit, but call us about your situation — we can often help with hardware.
