Custom roller shades in a Waltham, MA home office

Light Control, Privacy, Insulation

The Right Shade for Each Room

A south-facing Wellesley sunroom, a Cambridge street-side bedroom and a Waltham home office each need something different. Solar shades cut glare without erasing the view. Cellular shades add real insulation to drafty older windows — worth a great deal in a New England winter. Blackout roller shades let a bedroom stay dark past 5 a.m. in June.

Woven woods add texture; plantation shutters add architecture and resale value. We help you weigh looks, light, privacy, energy and budget window by window during your free in-home consultation.

One house, many answers

Most homes we measure end up with two or three different products — each chosen for how that room is used.

Product Range

What We Carry

Every product is built to your measurements in the fabric, color and lift system you choose.

Roller & solar shades

Clean, minimal and easy to motorize. Solar screens cut glare and UV while keeping the view; blackout fabrics darken bedrooms.
  • Light-filtering to blackout
  • Cassette or open roll

Cellular / honeycomb shades

Air pockets insulate against heat and cold — our top pick for drafty, older Greater Boston windows.
  • Single or double cell
  • Top-down / bottom-up

Roman fabric shades

Soft folds in designer fabric; can match your drapery or upholstery for a coordinated room.
  • Flat, hobbled, relaxed
  • Lined or blackout

Woven wood & natural shades

Bamboo, reeds and grasses add organic texture to living rooms, sunrooms and coastal-style spaces.
  • Privacy liners available
  • Edge binding options

Wood & faux-wood blinds

Precise tilt control. Faux wood resists humidity in kitchens and baths; real wood is lighter for wide windows.
  • 2" and 2½" slats
  • Cordless or motorized

Plantation shutters

Interior shutters add permanent architecture, excellent light control and resale appeal.
  • Custom louver sizes
  • Arches & specialty shapes

Tricky Windows

We Handle the Awkward Openings

The windows other companies skip are where custom work really earns its keep.
01

Arches & angles

Fixed arch shades, angled-top blinds and shaped shutters for Palladian and trapezoid windows.
02

Deep Colonial jambs

Inside mounts that look built-in, with hardware adapted for out-of-square plaster openings.
03

Skylights

Motorized or pole-operated skylight shades that cut heat and glare from above.
04

Stairwells & two-story

Windows twenty feet up become one-button easy with motorization.
05

Doors & sliders

French-door shades with hold-downs, sliding panels and vertical options for patio doors.
06

Nurseries & kids' rooms

Cordless and motorized lifts remove loop hazards — our default recommendation for children.
Cellular shades layered with drapery in a Greater Boston bedroom

Layering

Shades Underneath, Drapery on Top

The most comfortable rooms often combine a functional shade with decorative drapery. The shade handles light and privacy; custom drapery adds color, softness and height. Together they also block more cold air at night.

See layered rooms in the project gallery and check the specials page for current offers on shades and blinds.

  • Blackout for bedrooms
  • Softness for living rooms
  • Privacy by day and night
  • Better insulation

Designer Tips

Six Guidelines Our Designers Swear By

Whether you are treating one window or an entire house, these principles help you make confident choices before your consultation.
1

Start with how the room is used

A bedroom needs darkness and quiet, a home office needs glare control, a family room needs durability and easy operation. Function first, then style — the right fabric or shade follows naturally once we know what the room has to do every day.

2

Mount higher and wider than you think

Hanging drapery hardware close to the ceiling and extending it past the window casing makes windows look taller and lets panels stack off the glass. It is the single easiest way to make a room feel bigger and brighter.

3

Layer for flexibility

A functional shade underneath and decorative drapery on top gives you privacy by day, darkness at night and softness year-round. Layering also adds insulation that you will notice during a Greater Boston winter.

4

Mind the sun

South- and west-facing rooms fade floors, rugs and upholstery. Solar shades, lined drapery and UV-resistant fabrics protect what you have invested in without shutting out the view.

5

Keep kids and pets safe

Cordless lifts and motorized shades remove dangling cords entirely. We recommend them by default in nurseries, children's rooms and any home with curious pets.

6

Think about the whole house

Consistent shade colors and hardware finishes from the street give a home a tidy, cohesive look, even when every room inside uses a different style. We plan exterior appearance as carefully as interior design.

FAQ

Blinds & Shades Questions

Still have a question? Call (781) 899-1811 or email info@designsinblinds.com.

Inside mount or outside mount?

Inside mounts show off trim and look built-in when the jamb is deep enough. Outside mounts cover more glass, block more light and hide out-of-square openings. We decide window by window while measuring.

Which shades insulate best?

Cellular shades, especially double-cell with side tracks, trap air and measurably reduce heat loss — a practical upgrade for older Greater Boston homes.

Are cordless shades safer for kids and pets?

Yes. Cordless lifts and motorization remove the loop hazard entirely, and we recommend them by default in children's rooms.

How fast can blinds and shades be installed?

Typically two to four weeks after measuring, depending on the material and whether the order is motorized.

Blinds or shutters for resale value?

Plantation shutters are often viewed as a permanent home improvement and are a favorite with buyers. Quality shades are a great value when budget matters more.

Can I add motors later?

Some products can be retrofitted, but it is usually simpler and less expensive to order motorized from the start. We'll flag the windows where it's worth considering.
